If the knee receives a large impact, or is forced to move in a strange direction or beyond its usual range of movement, this may cause a knee injury. Sometimes it is the bones which are damaged, but more often it is the soft tissue such as ligaments which are affected.
The most common types of knee injuries inlcude:
- Sprains can occur if a ligament in the knee has been overstretched by twisting or being forced to move in a strange direction, for example, during a sporting accident
- Strains occurs when muscles or tendons are overstretched
- Bleeding in the joint which can occur when a ligament is torn
- Torn meniscus is a part of the knee made of cartilage, which can tear if the knee joint is bent and then twisted
- Torn ligament injuries where you will usually hear a snapping sound when this occurs
Knee injury compensation amounts:
- Knee injuries such as torn cartilage or meniscus, dislocation, ligament damage; injuries resulting in minor instability or weakness: up to £17,500 knee injury compensation.
- Leg fracture extending into the knee joint causing pain which is constant, permanent, limiting movement or impairing agility and rendering the injured person prone to osteoarthritis and the risk of arthroplasty: up to £45,750 knee injury compensation
- Serious knee injury where there has been disruption of the joint, gross ligamentous damage, lengthy treatment, considerable pain and loss of function and an arthrodesis or arthroplasty has taken place or is inevitable can lead to knee compensation claims up to £63,000.
Compensation for knee injury claims can also be awarded for loss of earnings, both past and future if the injury is serious enough to prevent the injured party working again and for associated losses such as medication, and treatments like physiotherapy or psychological help.
