The hands are cosmetically and functionally the most important component parts of the upper limbs. The loss of a hand is valued not far short of the amount which would be awarded for the loss of the arm itself. Hand injuries including damaging fingers, thumbs and amputations are all too common in the workplace and have a significant impact on a victims quality of life.
Accidents that can cause hand injuries:
- Bicycle and motorbike road traffic accidents are common causes of hand injuries, where people have a tendency to put their hand out to brake their fall, often resulting in a hand injury.
- Slipping and/or tripping accidents, in shops that have slippery surfaces with inadequate signage or on pavements that have uneven flagstones, cracks or holes
- Accidents in the workplace such as hands being trapped in work machinery typically due to insufficient or non-existent machine guards, resulting in loss of finger, thumbs or the full hand
The top 5 hand injuries are: (1) lacerations (cuts), (2) fractures and dislocations, (3) soft tissue injuries and amputations, (4) infections, and (5) burns
Hand injury compensation amounts:
Severe hand injury compensation claims can be over £85,000 for full amputation where no effective prosthesis can be used. Solicitors look at case law and guidance from the Judicial Studies Board, which publishes tables of likely compensation. No two cases are the same and individual circumstances have to be taken into account.
- Minor hand injuries such as fracture of a finger but with complete recovery: up to £5,700 hand injury compensation.
- Severe hand injuries: up to £20,750 hand injury compensation.
- Total or effective loss of both hands, where no effective prosthesis can be used: over £85,000 hand injury compensation.
Hand compensation claims can also be awarded for loss of earnings, both past and future if the injury is serious enough to prevent the injured party working again and for associated losses such as medication, and treatments like physiotherapy or psychological help.
Have you been involved in an accident that was not your fault and subsequently received hand injuries? If so you could be entitled to make a hand injury compensation claim. Antony Hodari can assess your case and determine if there is a hand accident compensation claim to be made.
